Any suggestions will be very helpful. I have a compaq presario 1692 that had Windows 98 factory installed on it. I have recently upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro, and now have realized that the cooling fan is not functioning. I have searched for drivers on the compaq website and have even emailed a tech, but they don't support when upgrading the OS, and instructed me to check other sites for drivers. I then checked the Windows site for drivers but came up with nothing. I was hoping someone had incurred a similar situation, and could help me out. Thanks in advance!

drivers for a cooling fan, what? cooling fans have NOTHING to do with the operating systems nor do they require drivers, they run directly off of the power supply,

On the contrary, this is a laptop and it is structured a little differently than a desktop! The cooling fan has some correlation with the Compaq software that is factory installed on the laptop when shipped. Unless there is factual evidence, I assume that there is some sort of software issue which is causing the fan to not funtion correctly.
The fan is not broken, because it worked when the factory Windows 98 was installed on it.
Now, if anyone has any postive feedback to possibly solving this issue, i would appreciate it. Otherwise, spare me of your comments for i am not a novice!

You may not be a novice, but you are wrong about drivers for the fan. The fan is controlled by a thermistor.
The cooling fan is connected to a thermistor circuit (a device that detects changes in temperature and varies resistance) that controls when the fan is turned on and off. Simply put, the fan will turn on when the unit is hot enough (150 degrees Fahrenheit) while running on battery.
Extended use of one or more devices (e.g., CD-ROM, Hard Drive, Floppy, Modem, and battery charging) will cause the internal temperature of the computer to rise. If the unit is in a cool environment, the fan may not come on at all. If the computer is in a hot environment, the fan might stay on all the time. A protective circuit will power down the unit if the processor becomes too hot.
if the unit is running on A/C power, the fan runs constantly.
Use the quick restore Cd to go back to win98, and see if the problem disapears. I have a presario 1700 that has a similar problem. I'm trying to figure out if the thermistor is on the fan/heatsink, or on the main board.
