Can someone tell me if it is worth going from Windows 98se to Windows 2000/2000 Pro?
I have been faithful to 98 for some time now, but since it won't be supported much longer... should I make the change? Are there speed advantages? Better usage of peripherals, etc..?
Thanks ahead of time

Speed ? Nothing you will notice. You may experience a slow down. IMOSHO
Advantages ? yes. Too many to list.
Peripherals ? Maybe. Depends on whether or not you can find drivers.
ME and 2000 were overlooked in this department.IMOSHO
My advice:]
Wait it out. Stick with 98 until you can build a new machine with "OK" to "THE VERY BEST" parts available depending on budget. Entry level:] 1ghz processor with 512MB of DDR or Rambus memory. 7200rpm 40GB HD. XP PRO.
If budget isnt an issue go with pentiums latest greatest+Rambus. If it is AMD and DDR will keep up with and out perform intel on every level.
I recommend Intel and Rambus to others because personally i receive fewer technical support queries about it. Personally i am an AMD DDR user-supporter.
IMOSHO [in my oh so humble opinion:]

I just built this machine, actually.
Epox 8kha+ Mobo
Athlon 1700 XP
256 Corsair 2100 DDR RAM
Maxtor 30GB 7200 RpmThanks for your comments, Jeremy.

Almost anything today is better than 98 unless you are just playing games. If so, Windows 2000 may disappoint you. It's a great OS, it's just not meant as a replacement for 98. XP would probably be a better choice for you and most home users. I agree that you want to be sure to have a powerful enough machine to run it though. You machine would be plenty. A bit more RAM certainly wouldn't hurt but 256 will certainly do the job.
Go with XP. It really does rock.

As a sysadmin/consultant/helpdesk type of person I find that 2000 is the most stable Windows to date. XP is still suffering some bugs causing applications to crash. Never have problems in 2000 with games either (well, some old win9x games won't run, but I can easily waste all the free time I have on the games that will :-))))

Thanks, everyone for your opinions.... I will take them all into consideration. I am just a bit leary about the switch.
I am a pretty big gamer, so that has a lot to do with it.
Thanks again.

My early test of XP are very positive. There are a few older apps my company uses that don't run but those apps all have web-based alternatives (end-users hate change). Probably need the latest virus protection software with XP. Install was a snap.
Also, it runs some games I traditionally had problems running in W2K
