I played with a Mac at the store and saw that it was running Samba. The sales guy said that appletalk was still there, but Samba worked much better. I use Samba on my Linux boxes so that they can network with windows boxes.
What I'm getting at is no matter how you're physically connecting to the windows box, you need to use Samba as the protocol.
