Intel Pentium III 866
128 megs of PC133 RAM
Abit VH6-II motherboard
STB Virge video card
US Robotics 56K Performance Pro Modem
Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 1I'm having the following problems since I have built my machine last month:
In the event viewer I am getting the following 3 errors every time I power up:
1)The Vpctcom service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.2)Could not report the discovered legacy device Serial10001 to the IO subsystem.
3)While validating that \Device\Serial0 was really a serial port, the contents of the divisor latch register was identical to the interrupt enable and the receive registers. The device is assumed not to be a serial port and will be deleted.
I also have the following conflicted devices listed in my Computer Management tool:
Resource Device
IRQ 11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 11 VIA PCI Audio Controller
IRQ 11 U.S. Robotics 56K Fax PCI
IRQ 11 S3 ViRGE DX/GX
IRQ 3 Communications Port (COM2)
IRQ 3 Not AvailableTo fix the conflicts, I attempted to change their IRQ settings in the Device Manager, under the Resources tab. I encountered a problem here because, the "Use automatic settings" check box is checked, and 'grayed out' so that I cannot uncheck it. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling each of them and that didn't work either, as they returned to the same IRQ's.
To complicate things further, I have researched the "Not Available" device on IRQ 3. It is listed in my Device Manager under "Other Devices" as an "Unknown Device", and has no properties, on any of the tabs, except that it is using IRQ3 on I/O range 02E8 - 02EE. The easy solution here was to delete it. That did not help because when I restarted, Windows automatically detected an "Unknown Device" and insisted that I install it, and then disable it, because it could not find suitable drivers.
Any insight would be vastly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Did you try installing the 4 in 1 VIA driver that came on the CD provided by Abit? You should have received the CD with your mainboard. You can also download the drivers from the VIA site.

Actually, i am facing the exact same kind of problem
Abit KT7A-RAID, AMD 1.2GHZ CPU and my USB controllers,my raid controller , my sound card and my video card are assigned the same IRQ # i.e 11.
If you found the solutions , please let me know.
thanks

This is well documented at the following URL:
http://usbman.com/Win2000.htm.Basically, you must reconfigure both Win2K, AND your computer to Standard PC HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer).
In your BIOS, DISable PNP OS, DISable BIOS control of power, ENable USB Keyboard (whether you have one or not), ENable Assign IRQ for USB (if this option is available).
Then RE-install Win2k as an upgrade, hitting F-5 when the message, "Press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party SCSI or RAID driver., and choosing hal.dll, the Standard PC, NOT ANY ACPI or MPS types.
