Suddenly I am getting a msg saying my IP add. is conflicting with that of another system in the network.I have little technical know-how and couldn't fix the problem. But I was wondering what negative consequences this may have on my comp. Will the other system start viewing the same webpages I am viewing or intercept the webcam or voice chat invitation that I may be getting from users of yahoo msg and msn msg? What about virus spread?

this depends on how you are connected [internet or intranet] and how you are getting your ip address [static or dynamic]

Talk to your network administrator or your isp provider. This indicates a problem with their dhcp implementation or perhaps a imposter on their networks.

Thanks mate.I did talk to the net administrator - he said he has a dynamic IP generator.

So what was his excuse for you having a ip conflict then? This is his problem and only he can solve it. He needs to review his DHCP server settings [this is what he means by 'dynamic ip generator' [its really not a generator :-) ]

Yeah, you don't want anyone intercepting those web cam chats do you? LOL

The second IP address, the one that is causing the conflict will not get on the network. You are being notified of the error but the other guy is not even getting connected so don't worry about someone viewing your stuff.

Most likely what has happened is that someone has set a static IP address in the same range as those being set dynamically. There is nothing you can do about it and little the admin can do until he finds the culprit. But like I said, as long as you have that address, no one else will get it. YOu'll just get the annoying messages.

Hmm. Thanks a lot again. As to wanderer's question the person handling the network is a Chinese and I honestly had no idea what he was talking about when he was explaining things to me. The problem is he is a bit too pprofiteering in nature and has put 15 people in the same network, which has an original speed of 256 kbps!!!!BTW, I never really thought it's a physical generator thing.LOL.

that doesnt matter 15 people in the same network you can have 253 in the same segment so no worries there. He just needs to adjust the ip settings on a ws who has a static ip. Very stupid to not block that anyway on a network....
