This is a rather weird thing to me, the other night, our power went out, and this shut the computer off. At the time the computer was in standby. Now, two days afterwards, I went to boot the computer and a strange thing happens. The computer turns on, hard drive lights come on, tests the CD drive, but the monitor still stays no signal. I hear the harddrive spinning. I tested and put a floppy in but it didnt get far enough to test that, nor is it making the usual startup beep. I've tried shutting the power supply off and back on, no luck. Anyone have any clues? I need it to work ASAP I have an address to my interview tomorrow and need my comp up tonight, im helpless!!!

Have you tried booting into "safe mode" by pressing F8 repeatedly during startup? Also, check the connection from your monitor to your PC and if possible, try and switch the monitor.

It wont even boot up, the monitor light stays orange, and the floppy disk isn't being read, all which happens prior to being able to boot in safe mode, and ive checked the connections and all.. but the floppy disk not being read tells me its something with the computer itself not actually booting up...

Sounds like what the problem may be is the video card since the monitor light stays orange. It is not getting a signal. Try another video card.

No, I am not able to get into BIOS.. The computer powers on and then just sits there, and the harddrive light goes off after a few seconds.
Re: changing out the video card:
Do you think the video card would be effecting bootup? Because when i put a floppy disk in the computer doesnt read it, nor does it go through the startup beeps.. thats what made me think it had nothing to do with the monitor or video card, but maybe im wrong...
Oh, the keyboard doesnt work either, caps lock lights etc. wont come on.. maybe that has some signifigance into whats wrong.. could the video card cause that too?thanks

Re-seed you Ram or make sure someone did not take it out of the computer or gave you one that does work..LOL. Look at the power supply? try using a diff Hard drive and make sure the HD controller is working? do you get a post boot ?

Try putting in the win 2000 cd then power on.
should boot by itself and something on the screen should come on. If the screen still has no display it is probably video card. If it doesnt boot and run probably hd.

It is possible that when the grid shut down there was a power spike. Could affect the wall wart (laptop) or the sensitive innards also. If a desktop, try a new power supply
Just a thought.
