do you have a surge protector on the phone line?

does it work when you unplug the phone line, if not what happens when you remove the modem

If you mistakenly put the phone line into your Networking (cat5 cable) slot, you probably fryed something, either the card or mobo.

Phone cords carry low level electrical charges and can fry cards/boards if put into the networking slots.
