I have a program running on the toolbar that is a red circle with a white X. When I move my cursor over it, a text box comes up saying "Your Computer Is Infected". You cannot double-click or right-click on it. I do not know what the program is, but am pretty sure it is a spyware file. I have run AdawareSE and have removed all spyware that it has found, but it did not remove this...any ideas?

Any Anti-virus programs on there, also use spybot and ad-aware together. Go into safe mode and run all 3 and it should be able to eliminate all the infected files on your system. To go into safe mode press F8 at bootup.

What happens if you right-click on the icon? What options do you have? Does it identify the program?

have you tried doing a search on google for -- red circle with x your computer is infected --. It may give you some clues as to what it may be. I didn't read them all but it seems that you are in good company.

Here is one of the posts in the threads returned by the search above in Google:
There is another post on removing spy sherrif which is what this is apparently
----------------

On my Windows 2000 machine, the red circle in the system tray was caused by c:\winstall.exe and the pop-ups were caused by executable files named *32.exe generated by the file c:\winnt\system32\ntey32.exe.

To fix the problems, I did the following:

1) Booted up in Safe Mode.
2) Deleted c:\winstall.exe (red circle in the system tray should be gone)
3) Deleted c:\winnt\system32\ntey32.exe (no more files names *32.exe should be generated)

To clean up what ntey32.exe generated, do a search for all files named *32.exe. IMPORTANT: do NOT delete all these files because some are Windows system files. I knew what day my virus problems started, and deleted all files with a last modified date of that date or later. Before deleting each one, if you're familiar with the Windows registry, you can also delete all keys that reference those file names.

Hello All.
You have picked up some malicious spyware. Ad Aware will not find it. you will need a program like Spy Sweeper or Spyware Nuker to find it, or you can try XoftSpy this program is voted number one in spyware finder. Have a nice day.

May the force be with you.
