Win2K gives the following: "This device is disabled becase the firmware of the device did not give the required resources. (Code 29)" Code 29 corresponds to a device that was "disabled by a user through the BIOS" Meh? I don't get it. There's nothing wrong with the BIOS, and I usre didn't muck with it. The modem is listed in hcl.txt, so it should work. I don't think this is a hardware problem.

What is the model of your Presario? What is the make and model of the modem? Have you udated the BIOS to the latest available from the motherboard manufacturer?

Presario model 4504. Compaq support page, which sucks, in my opinion, offers no BIOS upgrades. I'm sort of just clueless right about now.

I've got the same problem with my Presario 4860, and the German MS site says that the only solution is to buy a modem supported by Windows 2000. Furthermore, that Windows 2000 is not supported on the entire Presario line. What a bunch of jerks.

I own a presario 4880, its J.U.N.K.
I installed Linux on it, doesn't work, installed NT Server on it...modem problems, com port problems, 56K-df problems, compaq, are you listening?

Presario 4880, 56K-DF Winmodem, Linux user:
here's what you can do
-install the linux driver for Lucent LT winmodem
-run pppd
-run minicom (serial device /dev/ttyS3 or ttyLT0
I was able to connect!!
Hope that works for you 4880 owners

To all:
I have been battling this Compaq Presario 56K-DF modem problem for about 1.5 years now.
1. Compaq will not support you in any way, shape, or form when it comes to Windows 2000 Professional on any Compaq Presario laptop so DON'T BOTHER CALLING THEIR TECH SUPPORT.
2. There is no driver that exists on any of Compaq's webpage so I wouldn't even attempt to search their tech support area....See number 1.
3. As far as I can tell, with numerous searchs of online "driver" websites, there is no driver that will support this particular modem. Not even Microsoft!!!
Conclusion: Spend the $89.00-$109.00 (depending upon your choice) and pick up another PCMCIA modem card. I am now using a 3Com card and have no problems dialing up to the internet. For those of you with dual PCMCIA slots....have you thought about trying the combo cards such as Xircom?
That is all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
