Comment:

Do anyone have a clue just how to close TCP/UDP ports in Win2k?? I suppose this means a registry hack, but where in the registry?? I know how itīs done in UNIX/Linux, simply editing the /etc/service file. But how do you manage the same thing in Win2k?? And yes I know that you can/should uninstall unwanted services, but thatīs not the issue here. I want to know if itīs possible to "manually" close listening ports without installing a firewall or thirdparty software??

Go to the properties of the required network card, select internet protocol(TCP/IP), select properties, on the general tab select advanced, on the options tab select TCP/IP filtering and then properties. You can now filter any tcp ports, udp ports, or IP protocols.

On my Win2K system, there is no option for IP filtering, only IP security. But using IPSEC tools from MS, in conjunction with the MMC you can easily set any options with incoming, outgoing, inside-out, upside-down and twirly-wirly ports. :D

Control Panel--> Administrative Tools--> Local Security

You can specify separately which TCP, UDP ports, or IP protocol, by following:

Control Panel->
Network and Dialup->
->
Properties->
TCP/IP(Properties)->
Advanced->
Options(IP security)

When you're here, you can turn off all ports, and then turn on only those you want to leave open.

A correction to my previous post:

You can specify separately which TCP, UDP ports, or IP protocol, by following:

Control Panel->
Network and Dialup->
Loc. Area Connection (or whatever you have)->
Properties->
Internet Protocaol (TCP/IP) Properties->
Advanced->
Options(TCP/IP filtering)

When you're here, the first thing you notice is that the default configuration is "Permit All" for TCP and UDP. You can change the default to "Permit Only", and then specify exactly which ports you want to allow.

Not as flexible as some other tools, but it works.
