If you have McAfee Antivirus software installed or other products by McAfee or Network Associates, I would try unistalling those products. It seemed to work for me. Otherwise, I would try searching on the internet using the following string as the search query:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
Goodluck.

I have noticed that this happens to me after I install visual studio 6.0 (including all the service packs). I have tested this on three different machines (all running win2k) and they all experienced this error after the VS 6.0 installation. I have yet to find a solution unfortunately, but if I do I will let you know.

Same explorer.exe problem here. Try right-clicking the explorer icon, open properties, change "target location" from %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe to %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /select,C:\"whatever here" such as "documents and settings"(without the quotes). Worked for me. Good Luck

The solution to change the target location to %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /select,C:\"some directory" solved my explorer crashing problem too. "some directory" references the name of a directory in the root of your c:\ path.
Thanks for the great tip!!!

Hi
The tip seems to fix the problem but in fact it persists if you try to press the back button on explorer.
