Comment:

I recently installed a 2nd dvd-rom drive LG(GDR-8161B), the drive is detected and I did install Power DVD however when I play a dvd it plays like a slow slide show. One picture/frame every 15 or 20 seconds.

I have a 128Mb of onboard video but that should be adaquate for dvd's.

I believe that I need to buy a good used Video card but maybe I overlooked something.

Your last two statements seem at odds with each other - regardless, the video card isn't that much of a factor, DVDs play fine with my 32Mb ATI

Might want to ensure that DMA is working for the new drive - maybe try another DVD application

Good point...
Yes I did check the DMA and they are checked, though I also tried unchecking it. I uninstalled Power DVD (ver.4), tried DivX, VLC media player to no avail.

Reinstalled Power DVD and added a patch from that version. Tried different dvd's and I'm still watching a slide show. The audio is ok however.

It's always easier to say what it isn't than what it is.

A little searching seems to point to a firmware issue for that model

If you're having playback problems with our DVDs' it is more than likely that you have 'GDR8161B' somewhere in the model number of your DVD drive.

Haven't had much time to work on it lately, however I reinstalled Win 2000 Pro because instead of beating my brains out over this problem I'd sooner start from scratch.

Upon reinstalling it, my video card now says it's a 32Mb onboard, not the 128Mb it said before. (Something told me that a 128 Mb onboard was odd for a 2001 Pentium 3.) Now it works great.

Thanks Jboy
