2 questions for you:

1. How much are you willing to spend?;
2. What are you using this machine for?

If you are merely using this machine to use MS Office, balance your checkbook and surf internet pages, then a Celeron is perfectly acceptable. However, if you are using this machine for gaming purposes, any image rendering applications, or multi-media applications (converting video to data and making your own videos), then go with the PIII. As for pricing, you can get a Celeron 900-1000 MHz for about $70 and a 900-1000MHz PIII for about $130.

First off the motherboard that I have only takes a slot 1 processor so I am limited on what I can use.I use the computer for fixing pics with adobe and it is used for playing a game unreal tornament.The processor that I have now is a p 3 450MHz.It works pretty good but I switched to window 2000 and it seems a bit slower than before.I am going from a p450 to a probably a celeron 1000 the reason I was asking is somebody told me that the 450 p3 was about the same as the ceieron 1000 and I was thinking that the person was wrong.The slot 1 limits the speed of processors i have to choose from,There is about a $100 diference between the celeron 1000 and the p3 1100 and was wondering if the 450 works pretty good if I was to save the $100 and get the celeron if I would see a big diffence or if the guy I was talking to was right and the 450p3 is about the same as a celeron 1000.I was told where I was going to buy it from there is about a 20% difference between a celeron and a p3 of the same speed if thats right them i should see a big difference between what I have a p3 450MHz and a celeron 1000MHz right?

Spend the extra money and get the PIII.

The speed curve on the PIII jumps almost double on a PIII-550 over a PIII-450. When you get to the PIII-1.13gig you nearly double again.

The best a Celeron 1000 would do is match the PIII-550 performance.

Check out the prices at http://www.pricewatch.com before you buy anything.

Buy the Celeron and use the money you save to buy more memory. Memory is what you need for photo editing, and any processor over 800MHz will do a wonderful job for you.

I'm with Ger on this one. A good processor doesn't hurt, but I believe that you get more performance for your money with RAM. Also, ram is relatively cheap right now. I'd much rather have a celeron 900 with 512 or 768 or 1024 mb of ram than a PIII anything with 128mb of ram or less. Besides that, you are actually limited by the motherboard clock speed as to how fast the processor can transfer data. All these new super-fast processors actually incorporate stop sequences(wait states) so they don't overrun the bus of the mb with data. Get the Celery (although i like amd b/c they are faster and cheaper) and buy a crapload of ram. let us know what you do! dan

I was in a simular situation a few months back. I wanted to upgrade my CPU. My mother board only had a slot one on it. I called around and found that Slot One Processors are hard to find. You may want to check that you can find a celeron and or PIII Processor before you buy. I've found a lot of celerons that are not slot ones too.
So, do your home work with www.pricewatch.com and good luck.

I upgraded to a ECS motherboard and a AMD 1600 XP. You can get both for what you will pay just for the PIII. Very fast and stable......the motherboard is the k7s5a it doesnt have all the bells and whistles that the boards costing 2 to 4 times, but it has enough whistles...........and it benchmarks almost even and sometimes faster that the more expensive boards. Do a search around for the best price........AMD chips are a great bargin. I doubt I will go back to Intel.
