I currently downgraded from XP to 2000. Since then, my CDRW is not working. My CD drive works fine, I know the driver is right as well. When I stick a CDRW into the drive it doesn't even notice its there, it gives me the message: "insert a cd into the drive".
My CD drive is called:
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4120BDo you think I need to install the software to be able to write CDs?
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

did you do a clean install of win2k?
also you probably need win2K specific drivers for the drive or a bios update. who is the manufacturer? most have such file son their websites.
once you obtain such a driver, I would remove the device in win2k if it's there, and when shut down I would unplug it's IDE cable. then boot into win2k normally, mae sure it's gone, then power down again. re-plug the IDE cable in and let win2k find the new hardware. if it doesn't (and it should) add new hardware manually and just remember where you put your driver. I know that's a hassle but it's a safe bet.
it's highly unlikely that your burner works in XP and not win2k, it would usually be the other way around.
as for burning software, XP comes with some but it's crap. I would suggest either Nero or NTI. NTI is available for download as a trial. Personally I use Nero but be sure to get the latest version as I have just 5.0 and it doesn't support the toshiba DVD/CDRW combo on my notebook.
good luck

I believe XP has CD burning software installed but 2000 does not. You would need to get something like Nero ot NTI. Look in hardware profiles if the drive is listed there then it has the drivers for the CD drive.
