OS: WIN 2000 PRO
CPU/Ram: P4/512MB
Comment:

After booting into Windows 2000 PRO I cannot read the contents of a CD. Windows just keeps saying "Insert a disk into drive." If I leave the disk in the drive then logout/login then the CD-ROM drive will spin up and I can read the disk. If I take the disk out of the drive then logout/login then it's the same problem as when booting up - no read. I've tried everything I know to try to correct this problem. What could be causing a problem like this? Thanks!

P.S. I'm running SP4 on P4 512MB RAM and a new Memorex 52AJMAXX CD-ROM drive.

Have you gone to the mfg website to see if there is a firmware update for this CD-ROM. I have often resolved CD-ROM problems by updating the firmware for the device.

Also, I had to downgrade from W2K SP4 to SP3 since it caused my printer to crash windows (a DLL for the printer is reported in the crash dump). Did you have the same problem with SP3?

OK, I just downloaded and installed the latest firmware. Same problem.

Yes, I did have the same problem using SP3. I jsut installed SP4 last night hoping it would correct the CD-ROM read problem.

Any errors in the event viewer?

Yes, Removable Storage Service Event 116 with following message:

RSM could not identify the media in drive Drive 0 of library Memorex 52MAXX 2452AJ. An error was encountered while attempting to read data from the media.

I have tried all kinds of CDs. However, music CDs will open Media Player and play. Others cannot be read nor will they autorun without first logout/login or having the CD in the drive when booting up.

I think it must be an issue with Windows more than hardware problem. What could it be?? Thanks!

Hi,
I’m experiencing the same problem, except, in my case even if I logout/login, I still can’t access my CD-ROM drive.

My system specs are:
- Win 2K
- 64MB RAM
- Sony CD-ROM drive

I suspect that it may be related to user accounts.

I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 2000 Professional. This time I chose the NTFS vs the FAT32 that was with the previous install. After installing I updated to Service Pack 4. Now the drive works the way it should. I don't know if it has to do with changing the file system type or what but somehow I knew it was not a problem with hardware but Windows as usual!
