Windows 2000 pro includes, under start/programs/accessories/entertainment, a CD player program. Mine has never made a sound. It appears to be playing the CD, but there is no response to the sound control. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Do you have a sound card??? If so are the drivers set up right??? If so do you have your speakers plugged into the right area on the sound card??? If so, open the chassis, and look to make sure that you have an audio cable going FROM the CD-ROM that you are trying to play music CDs in, TO the sound card, either on-board or on the PCI/ISA sound card... Check these things... If all things look good, check on simple things like within control panel check your volume settings to make sure the volume isnt muted or something simple like that... If still isnt working and all looks good, try to change speakers, or sound card... Try these things and let me know where you stand...

Thanks for the response. This is a new computer with an ASUS A7N8X deluxe motherboard. The sound card is onboard (NVIDIA nForce). In addition to the fact that the CD player accessory won’t deliver sound while playing a CD, I find that RealPlayerOne acts the same way. However, I can play .cda tracks with MediaPlayer. I can’t direct MediaPlayer to play the CD (I see no way to do that), but if I direct it to the drive and select a track or tracks on the CD, MediaPlayer will play them fine. I have a TDK CD burner that I moved into this computer from my old Windows 95 machine. It’s about 2 years old. It came with TDK digital mixmaster software which should play a CD (and used to in my old computer), but if I direct it to play a CD, I get a message that says, “Can’t convert CDROM drive letter to ASPI information. Digital reading is impossible.” Does this help? Thanks for your thoughts.
