Hey, I was just wondering if any one could give me a few suggestions on what CD burners are the best or what they would buy. I'm looking to buy a writer preferably in the next two weeks. I've looked online at several products just to get a good idea of what's out there. And so far the TDK 24x10x40 and Philips 20x10x40 are tops on my list. If anyone knows about these writers or any others, I'd like to hear from you. I don't really wanna spend over $150 on one. So any advice/help would be greatly appreciately...thanks!

My favorites are Plextor and Yamaha, and they also get good reveiws on cnet.com.

I have had a SCSI 4x4x16 Yamaha for two years, and have burned over 500 CDs without one problem.

Sarah,

Definitely I would go for a brand name, such like those that Jason and Sandy recommend. I bought a Philips drive for 60 pounds (which I think is about 90 dollars) here in the UK, and that writes at 12x, which is very fast!

Having seen first hand the build quality (I have looked inside many drives as part of my work!) I can tell you that cheaper drives are often built poorly, and will inevitably break.

Now there are two types: IDE and SCSI (as Jason hints). I would go for IDE (the norm) if you're new to it (I did, its then pretty well a case of slotting the drive in and plugging in the cables to the computer). SCSI drives require extra hardware if you don't already have it, however some argue that they are more reliable and/or faster.

Hope this helps

PETE

Sarah i most definately recomend a plextor...i bought one about a year ago and it is some money well spent...ofcourse it could get a little pricey...to the point where it'll cost you about 450 dollars(canadian). Ofcourse i'm not stupid enough to spend that much so i just ended up buying it through a friend who worked at a computer store for 240.
