Comment:

This computer was setup as a domain controller, with DNS and DHCP. There appear to be no errors in event viewer relating to DNS. The connection to the internet is definitely working and there is a send and receive of bytes over the connection. The adsl connection is registered in internet explorer connections and it is the only connection to the internet. All the protocols are enabled ttl and ssl, all versions. Despite this web pages are not viewable, it either says, this page cannot be displayed or it reports dns lookup error. Click on detect settings, makes no difference. i cannot understand why web pages cannot be viewed. Any help would be gratefully received.

If you can ping external IP addresses but can't ping external domain names, delete the network adapter, reboot, let windows find it and reinstall it.
