Comment: My Network Place Directories and Files have disappeared. I can't cut and paste files and directories. And sometimes the mouse doesn't work. What kind of virus/trojan could this be? I've executed stinger, A2, Adware and Norton but they all say that I'm clean. My registry HKLM\SW\MS\WIN\CV\run is also fine. I've executed Mblast and FxAgentB. I can't format and re-install Windows 2000, because I have key applications that I need to backup and export properly. Please provide some assistance. Does anyone know where else in Windows 2000, that allows for changing the IP Address, the Gateway and DNS?

Reply: (edit)As to your question, there are worms that will write entries to your HOSTS file which will screw up browsing but the first thing to do is check that your IP address is as expected and on the same subnet as the other computers. There are other much more likely causes for this problem than viruses, like hardware, for starters. If this computer has "key" applications and you cannot do a re-install, what are you going to do if you have a hard drive crash or the computer is stolen? You should look into Norton Ghost or other disaster recovery options. Peter
