I am currently using windows 2000, but I cant seem to understand y in microsft paint u cant save pictures as "jpg" or " gif" etc. While in other os's like xp u can, oh and also i cant open jpg's in microsoft paint it opens it in internet explorer. can some1 tell me how i could rectify this or download somethin that does.
Thanx.

paint only will open bmp files.
you need a program like adobe photoshop, that will convert files to jpeg

jameco isn't exactly correct. You can certainly open jpg files and all other graphic files in Paint, but you're limited as to which filetypes you can "Save As". Any good photo editing software will allow you to change the filetype. There are many out there. www.tucows.com is just one site where you can download and try several different ones.
Your file association is what determines which program opens which file extension. You can change that by right clicking the file name, and select "Open With" and then select whichever photo program you wish to use as a default opening program for your graphic files. Check the box that says "Always use this...blah blah" to make the change for all files with that particular extension.

Theres another question i've gotta ask is there any site where i could download ms paint from, like the xp version. because i've heard u can download ms config which is not supplied in windows 2000, but which can be downloaded from a site.
