I can ping other computers on my ethernet lan but can't ping the gateway (at 10.0.0.4 as shown by ipconfig -all from the reluctant puter and the others on the LAN). I assume therefore that my hardware is OK, but can't understand why the gateway ping times out.
FWIIW, the other machines cannot ping the malfunctioning one.
Will appreciate any suggestions or questions.

I'm assuming that other machines on the network are in the same address range as the router i.e. 10.0.0.x and a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 for example.
If this is the case then I'm assuming that a setting on your router is not allowing ICMP packets.
Go to your browser and enter the IP of the router 10.0.0.4, enter the username and password and check your routers security settings, if you can and want to, allow ICMP requests.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most

Your assumption is correct.
"If this is the case then I'm assuming that a setting on your router is not allowing ICMP packets." However other computers on the lan are able to access the Internet, so if the router is creating the restriction it is only for this computer.
One hitch here is that the setup is a little complicated. The Internet feed is via a microwave link which is fed to the router. The router, which is some years old, is a Nomadix Hotspot Gateway. Unfortunately it was installed here well before my arrival and there is absolutely no documentation other than a cryptic note as to a login and a password which MIGHT belong to the box.
Further, I do not seem to be able to bring the box up in my browser using either:
http://10.0.0.4
https://10.0.0.4Am I using the wrong approach? If you can guide me here, I can check the admin panel.
On the other hand, if the fact that other puters can reach the Internet via the router precludes the router as the culprit, what else can we try?
