Can't ping myself

When I run 'ping 127.0.0.1' or 'ping localhost' I get 'Request timed out' - what should I do make my machine recognize itself?

Sounds like you have a firewall with some very dodgy anti-spoof protection, that your not replying to ICMP type 8. What are you TCP/IP filtering rules like and are you running any firewall software?
