Can't Ping Gateway But No Other Problem

It depends on your network setup and how you connect to the internet. You don't give any info on that so it's hard to say. If you can't ping the gateway on a LAN then it could be that you have the wrong gateway defined, or the gateway may be down, or you may have the wrong subnet mask defined.
As far as why you can still connect to the internet, well again, without knowing how you connect, it's hard to say.
