Help - I can't open certain web pages. (example I can log on to Ebay but can't view the "My Ebay" page) I receive the unable to connect check network connections, site may be down etc. page.
I ran every virus/trojan check software available (CWShredder, Hijackthis, RegMechanic and virus scan all in safe mode) and cleaned my system - I had something in my IE files but forgot what, it's been cleaned. I also had a virus (don't remember what one about 2 weeks ago and had to uninstall and reinstall IE and dial-up networking and outlook express). Still something isn't right!

Also can someone tell me how to disable Netbios in Win2K. I'm use to Win NT and the lack of control in 2000 is really frustrating!

Only other strange thing I've found on my system are two JET***.tmp files that I can't delete unless I stop all my services and once I delete them they return when I start back up. (also does anyone remember the exe in windows 98 the icon was a file cabinet and what it did was list files and showed who or what was connected to them? You could disconnect everyone or stop any running processes and remove the file. It was a great tool for finding out who and what was connected to a file. Wondering if something like this is available in 2000?)

sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.

I had that problem with IE 6. And this just after a new install on WinXP . . . Check to see if you have 3rd Party Cookie stoppers or Pop-Up Stopper running . . .

Or Use Mozilla FireBird . . So much better...

The exe you are refering to does not run in Win2K . . . What you want to do is Right Click "My Computer" and select "Manage" from the menu (it is one of the MMC snap-ins) and go to the shared folders - shows all shares file folders and who is using them.

Why do you want to disable NetBIOS? running a server?

Good Luck . . .

:o)

Thanks ctcnetworks - I disabled my popup software and now IE works. (why did it work last week with popup software enabled?)

I can't access the shares using MMC I keep getting error "the server service isn't started." I can't start the server service because it isn't listed as a service?

I want to disable netbios because I don't think I really need it running and isn't it a security issue when browsing the internet? No I don't have a server running with this PC.

thanks for your help with the web sites.

The NetBIOS service is only a seciurity risk when allowed to run over WAN TCP/IP connections . .

Generally speaking, a good, well configured Firewall will help stop access to the service...

To adjust, add or remove Protocols, right click "My Network Places" and select "Properties". From there, right click the network connection in question (easy if you have only one network card installed!)

Remember that Win2K uses this protocol to find other PC's on your network, and is default where you don't have a DNS Server (for full TCP/IP compatability).

I may be wrong here, so post the question in the networking forum . .

As for those Jetxxx files . . . . I can only think of HP print services . . ! Not seen these before - sorry...

Good Luck . . .

HELP AGAIN - -

Now I have my popup software turned off but can't access those web pages again! Actually the only time access certain pages was last night after I posted to this board and turned off my popup software?

What's going on and why can't I find the problem?

ctc - thanks for the info on the protocols but when I right click and go to properties I really don't have any options. TCP and Netbeui and MS Networking are listed but no options for NetBios under TCP/IP?
But that's the least of my problems right now. What's wrong with my IE and how do I find the problem?>>
Thanks in Advance for any help on this.

The simpplest answer would be to get yourself a different Browser (at least for the time being) so download http://downloads.us-east3.mozdev.org/seb/MozillaFirebird-0.7-setup.exe Firebird or http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.6b/mozilla-win32-1.6b-installer.exe Mozilla

You will have less issues with either...

Personally - I have been using FireBird for a month - Great...
