Hi,

I need help.

As of yesterday afternoon a couple of user's machines cant logon to the domain, saying its not available. It's weird, because other users on the same domain can. The users that can't connect can be logged in locally but have no net access or can't ping anything.

nslookup says it cant find the domain, and that it is non-existant. I'm confused.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

if they can't even ping, I'd say there is some fairly fundamental problem.

Are they being given a DHCP address? What do you get if you do an ipconfig /all on one of the PC's?

The network here uses static IPs. I changed the DNS to the other server we have running and that allows internet access, pinging of websites, access to shared areas on the other server. Change it back to the original DNS and that all stops.

I've tried removing one of the non-working PCs from the domain and to a workgroup, then tried rejoining the domain but was present with a message saying that PC can't be found on the domain etc.

If i do an ipconfig /all on one of these PCs that aren't working i get:

Win2000 IP Config
Host name - this is ok
primary DNS - this is ok, correct name
Node type - broadcast
IP routing enabled - no
Wins proxy enabled - no

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection
DCHP enabled - no
IP Address - this is ok, as it should be
Subnet mask - again, this is fine
Default gateway - again, ok
DNS server - this is ok too

Thanks for help so far :)

in your original post when you said the users can't ping anything with DNS pointing to the main server, did you mean external IP's , or they can't even ping IP's internally?

If the machines get no ping replies, then they certainly won't be able to authenticate to the Domain. My guess is it's a DNS issue...since you changed that.

dannyboy - we have two servers, if i point the DNS to the server that it should be pointing to i get no internal or external pings. If i change it to the other server then the internet and 'some' internal pings are ok.

Jennifer SUMN - any ideas what the problem could be. Only two out of the 6 or so machines pointing to this server are having problems.

When you say no ping, you mean ping by computer name or IP address? If you even can't ping by IP, then something wrong with the network card/cable. If you can ping by IP but not computer name, then something wrong with DNS. Use nslookup to see if the dns is working properly, also check if the Wins server is configured properly.
