I had Windows 2000 on my Compaq Presario 1600S and it was working fine. I had a bright idea of putting a linux operating system on the laptop. Ever since I tried I can't reinstall windows. I put in my disk at startup and the computer loads up and shows the compaq logo. After the logo disappears, nothing happens. I get a black screen. If I put a Gateway disk in it asks if I want to install windows or load normally. If I choose install, of cource it doesn't work because it is a gateway disk. My version of Windows 2000 is a Box purchase. I bought the laptop refirbished, so it never had an operating system.
How do I get windows to install?
Thanks,Russ

Are you saying you can't boot from 2k install CD any more?
If so, have you a floppy drive in laptop you can boot from - you can create a 4 floppy boot disk set to start 2k install - once started 2k's tools should let you remove any linux partitions (www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm or the 2k install CD - run makeboot or makebt32 to create disk set for the disks)
Or http://www.lpacomputers.telinco.co.uk/PD.zip is a partitioning tool you can run from a win98 boot disk to remove linux partitions (can't remember if fdisk will let you).

1.) get a hold of / create a win98 boot floppy.
2.) download DELPART and copy it to the boot floppy. {just google search for DELPART}
3.) boot with the win98 boot floppy.
4.) at the A:/ prompt type this DELPART and follow the instructions.
delpart kills em all.
good luck

Had the same problem on a desktop when I tried to set up a dual boot with Mandrake Linux 10 Community and Win2K. The Linux install went sount and left the partition unusable. It corrupted my Master Boot Record and couldn't delete the Linux partition until I edited the MBR so the HD knew who it was.
