Hello all!

I have Win98SE installed, and also Partition Magic 5.0 with BootMagic. I repartitioned my 15GB hard drive to have 2 primary partiotions (FAT32) in first 2 GB. On the first primary partition I still have win98 and on the second I was going to install win2000, but I cant even start installing WIN2K... After it notifies me that "This setup will install Win2000. Would you like to upgrade to win2k?" and I press "Yes" it starts setups blue screen and second after that gives me message "Windows 2000 can not detrmine the version of Windows running right now. Install cannot continue." ... and after I "okay" it just gives me screen saying that setup was not succesfull with "Finish" button. I tried to run setup directly thru winnt32.exe but results the same. Any recomendations?
I am gonna also install Linux on this drive later .. may be I should install Linux first and then install win2K from Linux ?

Thanks in advance

In answer to your last question.....I would install linux first........but Windows 2000 might not recognize it as far as the boot loader is concerned you may have to boot linux with a floppy when you want to use it. As far as Windows 2k not installing is this an upgrade edition of windows 2000. If it isnt I would do a clean install on its own partition. If it is an upgrade....isnt setup asking for a disk from your previous Windows. If it cant find your existing version of Windows it should ask you to point to it. You may want to keep Windows 9x on your machine for playing games and for fixing a problem in case something goes wrong with Windows 2x. Thats the only reasons I keep Windows 9x on my machines....to play some games and as a backup OS.

Thank you very much for the responce.

Undo, I was going to use Boot Magic for choosing OS (I have it installed)... but things have changed since I posted my last message :o)) I just posted on another message boardh list of my new problems which now for me is more crucial than win2K, I posted this message at Windows9X forum:
---------------------------------------------
Subject: Can I reinstall Win98 (on C:\) without loosing data on other partitions?a

Hello,
Be ready to hear this story, very rare case :O))
I have partitioned my the only 1 hard drive using Partition Magic 5.0:
Old configure: C - primary, D - logical (on extended). together 15GB and E:\ CD-ROM
New configure: C- primary, D: ,E:,F: ,G: - logical partitions, H - CD-ROM plus also I have between E: and F: Linux partition and Linux swap-space partiotion (Linux not installed yet). Initally I wanted To leave win98 (still "running" on C:\) and install WIN2K on D: and Linux OS on its own partition. But instead of having this dream machine with multiOS I have nightmare. All shortcuts screwed up, had to REinstall Office'97 after which I had usual problems with Access'97 ("No license running on this machine" - solved), also I can not reinstall office 2000 (it worked before, now it does not: see &&&), plus most of applications now must be run directly (as I sad earlier shortcuts died and I have to fix them one by one which is really annoying) and some of them have conflicts running.

&&& - to unload office2000 I can not because when I run it from H drive (CD ROM) in the middle of operation (any operation: remove, update existing, add new ....) install stops saying that there is no enough space on the H:/ drive (CD-ROM)....!?!? how can be free space on CD-ROM drive !!?!
I run eraser2000.exe which suppose to delete all Office2000 ...well instead of that it deleted important fonts like tahoma, times new roman ... and so on ... I added missing fonts (now I have about 650 fonts which slows down the system) but some applications still ask me for some fonts (even though it is there).
SO I think I have no other choice but install everything from the beginning including win98.2. So one of my questions is can I save all important data files (Not applications) such as graphic, music files documents and so on the last logical drive (for example G:\) and then reformat C,D,E,F drives to install win98.2 (on C:\) from the beginning with all necessary drivers, and also other OS, without lossing data on the G:\ ???
May be you also could give me an advice what is better to do in this case??

Please help me to solve this problem.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.
---------------------------------------------

What do you think about that.

Install Red Hat Linux 6.2, the most trusted Linux distribution, availaible free in this months Australian Personal Computer Magazine. It's a great operating system, never crashes and you can kiss all your problems goodbye. Also included is Suns Star Office. Sorry but Windows 2k suffers from too many problems.
