Comment:

I have Win2k Pro with SP1 installed and several programs too. Lately, a strange bug occur, I can't reactivate or install any new device or Hardware.
like 4 months ago, I successfully installed my D-Link DFE 530-TX Ethernet adapter, then i desactivated it to use my modem instead. Now i want to reactivate it, I go in the Control Panel, System, Device manager, i reactivate the device by clicking "Enable" on it, then Windows Finds new Hardware.

In the "Found New Hardware" Window, i have my D-Link DFE 530-TX Ethernet adapter detected. Then i get a window that tells me: "An error occured during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified". In that window when i click finish, i get the Found New Hardware Window again that detect my adapter and the same thing happen all the time without being able to install the adapter.

The same thing happens if i try to reactivate any other device that i previously desactive (ex.: the monitor)

And now it seems that i can't install any New device, i get the same error. What's wrong and what can i do?

Try uninstalling SP1.

For some odd reason any hardware installed afer installing SP1 doesn't get installed.

I had the same problem as you, (recently) except it was a graphics card I was trying to install.
