Hi there.
I previously had Norton installed, but the subscription ran out. I installed McAfee without removing Norton (stupid me) and that caused the computer to freeze every time windows started. I tried the same thing on Win ME (dual boot) and the same thing happened. The only way I could get it started was to use a boot disk and manually remove McAfee and Norton folders and their contents from the dos prompt.
That was OK; the computer now works. But I cannot install either antivirus system, as they both tell me that previous software is installed. I have tried to remove all folders to do with these programs, but this has not helped. I even tried repairing the protected files using the sfc / scannow thing. NOthing has helped.
I am on the verge of formatting. Can anyone PLEASE help??

Symantec has detailed instructions on how to uninstall/remove Norton and Symantec anti-virus. Just go to their site and search for your particular product.
