For some reason i can't install either win2k or winxp on my computer.

I was running Xp, but one day i got some kind of blue screen error (don't remember the specifics, sorry!) every time i started my computer.

Believing it to be a hardware problem with my HDD, i took it out of the computer and connected it to the computer of a friend. After some difficulty he managed to access the hdd (using a win98 startdisk). after formatting the hdd (format C:) we installed winxp without problems.
Then i brought my hdd home, reinserted it in my own computer and - i still got a blue screen error.

using the same win98 startdisk i then formatted the hdd and tried to install winxp again. Booting and initial setup from the CD went fine, but after accepting the license-agreement, things took a bad turn.
When xp tried to copy installation files, a lot of them couldn't be copied. i tried several times, using different CD's, but still no go.

just for the hell of it, i then tried to install win95, and it installed without any problems.

I have tried several times to install xp or 2K, but it fails every time. I have tried the following:
delpart.exe (deleting all partitions)
fdisk.exe (creating new primary partition)
format c: /u

but still installation fails.

am i screwed?

Your problem must come from your Mainboard! If you have Abit, you have to download new Hpt366 controllers and put them on a floppy disk since old Highpoint controllers are not compatible with XP or Win2k.

When you install XP, the program will ask to press F6 to add new controllers. Press F6, load the disk and choose the new controller.

I hac the same problem and it worked great with me.

Maybe youre problem is that you RAM memory isn't set correctly in the bios settings.
If you have two RAM modules, check the recommended speed of youre ram and assign it to that speed. Becouse maybe you've got a module that has a speed of 100 MHZ and the other one is 133MHZ. If this is the problem than set youre speed to 100 MHZ or get the 100 MHZ out.

Yep! I am up and running again! I have 128mb ram set to 100Mhz, and 2x64mb Ram set to 133Mhz.

I tried removing the 133Mhz ram, and voila!

Problem Solved!!

Thanks a lot!
