I bought a refurbished laptop from Gateway about one year ago this month. At first, the Cd-rom drive worked ok - It was a bit slow, but nothing to drastic. Unfortunately now, it does not work at all. I often have a hard time just getting the drive to open and when I do get it to open, when I put a CD in, it never reads it. It acts as if I didn't even put a CD in.
I have tried downloading drivers for it, tried cleaning the drive - but nothing has seemed to works. Any thoughts or any ideas as to what's wrong? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

If you use a Dos Boot Disk with (Note the WITH part) DOS Cdrom Drivers this well determine if the Drive is at leat salavgeable.
goto : http://support.buympc.com/downloads/boot.html
and download the file 98BOT10A.EXE, run it - this creates a DOS Boot Disk with CDRom Support. [ Or use any Dos CDRom support boot floppy]
Once the boot sequence is complete - put in a CDrom Disc in the drive, switch to the Drive letter assigned by the Boot Disk. See if you can read the CDrom - DIR drive:
If you can not access the Drive in DOS, you get errors like, " Drive not ready " or " cannot find drive specified " - it's toast
If it doesn't function in DOS, graveyard time. Is it still under warranty - RMA that Drive.
