Are you serious ? You can NOT format the drive that Windows is currently running on.

You need to restart with a bootable floppy and then run the FORMAT C: from there.

I have the EXACT same problem of trying to format. Get this same volume in use message.

What do you mean by restart with a bootable floppy.

When I restart with my boot in = 2000 just goes right through to sign on????

If you have a Win98 Bootup disk, or can get a hold of one, you can boot up with that and run your format C: from there

When you try to format while using Windows, you are like trying to knock down the building you while you are standing inside it, it wont let you, its a safety feature.

So you need to go out of the building, and make sure no one is inside, which when translated, you restart the computer without Windows (ie, with a bootable floppy, with the FORMAT command on it), then you can format your drive.

Go to bootdisk.com and download a boot disk if you need it. If your system boots straight to the OS with the floppy in, you need to go into BIOS and set the floppy as 1st boot.

Use a 95 or 98 start up disk
Boot to A: Fdisk
Delete Partition or logical drive
Delete primary DOS partition if fat16 or fat32
Delete Non DOS if NTFS
Next
Create DOS partition
Create primary DOS partition
Do you wish to use max size?_______Y
Reboot to A: format C:
You have FAT32
