Windows 2000 asks if you want to format at the beginneing of the install. Did it get that far? If you don't remember, run it again and when it asks, say yes and choose NTFS. If you already formatted to NTFS, there is no reason to format again.
If it's not booting to a floppy, change the boot sequence in the BIOS>

I did that... the thing is, is that the copy of windows said it can't verify the registry info (it never asked me for the cd code). It then proceed to shut down! I restarted and now it want's the sp4 cd with a nafcat file ..ok... (??? so is that the same cd ???) I don't know.....

All that aside.... I Just Want To Reformat the hard drive now and start over with a proper copy of Windows.

I can boot to dos ok.. but when I go to change from a: drive to c: it says invalid drive specfication. (so intrun I can't access the hard drive to format)

What am i supose to do?

(is the hard drive cought in somesort of a loop. why wouldn't it be accessable through dos?)

How can you boot to DOS, if you part installed W2K ther is no DOS period, W2K is built on NT not DOS Sub-System.

Try a boot disk and the following:

You say you want to start over. Do you have a good copy of the Win2K Installation CD? If so, set your BIOS to boot to that first. Then run the install.

You c: drive is ntfs which dos can't read. This is why Jennifer is pointing you to booting the w2k cd via setting the boot order in the bios to cd as first boot device.

In other words forget the boot diskette unless it has cdrom drivers so you can then go to the w2k cd and in the i386 folder type winnt which will start the install.

Your mission is to get the w2k install started. Once you accomplish this you can reformat your drive via install.

Your 2000 CD may not be bootable so I would download the 4 boot floppies for 2000 and try installing it that way.

Good Luck

If none of that works, try madboot or the ultimate boot CD.

Hey thanks all for the support... :)

I figgured it out... I just downloaded Killdisk, witch erase's the hard drive with a pass of 1's or 0's ( not sure witch )

Any way that worked ! I just used fdisk and then reformated.. Cleared everything

only problem now is, I cant't get my CD-room to work.. :)

If you have another CDROM, you don't even have to install it. Let it hang out of the box on the cables and it should go. Everything might be set to cable select and that causes a boot problem sometimes. Check the jumpers,

You will need both the following from and the floppy drive in the laptop:
http://www.stickskilbane.com/downloads/bootdisks/?C=S;O=D

WINDOWS 98 SE STARTUP DISK.exe
Doscdrom.exe

They are both self-extracting self creating floppies.

Plus you will need to find the following files:

SMARTDRV.EXE
HIMEM.SYS

Boot the Laptop with the created W98 floppy, at the A:\>_ command prompt type:

FDISK and press ENTER

Follow instructions to create a FAT32 Primary Active C: partition (minimum say 10GB) and any further partitions you may require, for more details see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255867

After creating partitions reboot. Then after reboot you need to format the created C: drive, at the A:\>_ command prompt type:

FORMAT C: /S (please leave a space between format and c: and /s and press ENTER)

Insert the CDROM floppy, look thru the directories for readme's which show how to install a CD Drive Drivers.

COPY SMARTDRV.exe C: (please leave a space between copy and smartdrv.exe and c: and press ENTER)

COPY HIMEM.SYS C: (please leave a space between copy and hymem.sys and c: and press ENTER)

After copying over files edit the C:\CONFIG.SYS text file.

<DD>EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS (please leave a space between edit and config.sys and press ENTER)

Add the following as first line: device=himem.sys then press CTRL + X and then press Y to save.

Shut down the Laptop and swap over to the CD Drive and after rebooted you will have a screen showing the CD drive has been found by MSDOS and a drive letter assigned, lets assume it is drive D:

At the C:\>_ command prompt type:

<DD>SMARTDRV and press ENTER

Then insert the Windows 2000 CD and will need to navigate to the I386 folder, at the C:\>_ command prompt type:

D: and press ENTER
CD I386 and press ENTER
WINNT and press ENTER

Just follow instructions on the screen to install...................
