Hi - Something bad has apparently happened to some of the files needed for TCP/IP on my 2000 (pro) server. They're gone. I've tried reinstalling TCP/IP, but I never even get prompted for the CD; it's trying to copy them from the local HD, and it thinks it's successful. I've tried uninstalling the network card and all the drivers, rebooting, detecting the nic, and reinstalling from there - BUT THERE'S STILL NO WAY FOR ME TO FORCE IT TO INSTALL FROM THE CD!!! Please tell me I'm missing something simple. I don't have the time to spare for a full system reinstall. I also don't know exactly what files are missing, just that TCP/IP is hosed.

The TCP/IP protocol will never request the CD to be inserted, because all the programming needed is already copied to the HDD. If you are having connection problems, then uninstalling TCP/IP - rebooting -- and reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol should fix the problem. If you can connect but can't go anywhere then you are having DNS problems, and screwing with the TCP/IP is a waist of time. Besides noticing that some of the files are missing, what exactly is you unit Not doing?

I think FJ has stated the situation clearly. Your question is more of a curiousity than a technical one. Of course playing as directed by FJ should resolve any issues, perhaps you have something else going on? Can you describe the issue in more detail that you seem to see? Thanks,
