Comment:

I used PartitionMagic to convert an NTFS partition to FAT32 and now I have a few files which I can't delete/access/rename
because they have invalid filenames. For example one file is displayed in explorer or command prompt as: "FILE.UI." (no quotes).
CHKDSK doesn't find any problems and when I try to delete the directory containing the invalid file (with explorer or del "FILE.UI.") the error is "Can't find file...". Besides reformating, is there a way to fix this? I have both a hex editor and linux available to use.

Have you tried to delete this though DOS? If not guve it a try.

If this still fails rename it throgh DOS. eg
ren file*.* 123.123 then delete this file.

That did not work but I decided to try running the old win95 scandisk which DID find and correct the errors (which were in the directory structure). Why NT's chkdsk didn't work I'll never know but it's kind of irritating considering the cost of NT.
