sounds like you MIGHT have the blaster worm virus. Check in your task manager if you have the msblast.exe running. If so you are infected. Check the web for further information on removal and patches to resolve and disinfect your machine.

Had the same problem, no cut and paste, no print, ALSO NONE of my exe files would run. All icons changed to something that looked like a text icon.

I spent 8 hours with MS tech on phone Sat 8/23/03, he came up with nothing out of his extensive database. Installed win2000 in another folder. Lost lot of files, especially outlook address book and folders.

MS tech said temp fix is to rename exe to com. did not work for all.

Did find that all virus scanners are not equal. Best I found is eAnthology STOP-SIGN ( www.eanthology.com ) I found virus/trojan that 3 other scanners did not.

Still think there is a fix out there for the exe files. Any help???

put your win2k cd in the drive,
go to START/RUN and type sfc /scannow.
(system file checker)
It will replace missing, corrupt or bad critical system files.

HOWEVER: please read the following;
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=814510
as you may need to reinstall patches & servicepacks.
