Comment:

I have two computers (both Win2000) connected thru a Linksys BEFSR41 DSL router/switch.

I can ping and map the shared drives on my new computer (P4-2.4) from the old one (PII-350), but cannot ping or map anything from the new to the old computer.

I have a common user & protocol, no firewall/Norton in the way & I added each PC's IP into the respective hosts files - what am I missing?

I also have a problem sending mail through smtp (port 25) - but I can receive it OK (POP). Could this be related?

Thanks!

You could start by opening a command prompt windows and typing ipconfig /all on both computers and make sure your IP settings are correct.

1. Do you have file sharing enabled on both PCs?

2. In accordance with what Rick said, when viewing your IP settings, are both PCs on the same subnet?

3. Are you sure you have identical user accounts on each PC?

4. As for you outgoing email problem, make sure you are using the correct POP address for your ISP!
