Can't connect PC's thru router

Comment:
I have two computers (both Win2000) connected thru a Linksys BEFSR41 DSL router/switch.
I can ping and map the shared drives on my new computer (P4-2.4) from the old one (PII-350), but cannot ping or map anything from the new to the old computer.
I have a common user & protocol, no firewall/Norton in the way & I added each PC's IP into the respective hosts files - what am I missing?
I also have a problem sending mail through smtp (port 25) - but I can receive it OK (POP). Could this be related?
