i'm installing a dual-boot with Windows 98 and 2000. the problem is, Windows 2000 wont let me choose which partition i want to install it to; Windows 2000 automatically installs itself into C:\WINNT.

i ran Windows 2000 setup and chose to "not upgrade."
i went into the "Advanced" options the in next window and clicked "I want to choose the partition..."
i then ran the setup and the installation never prompted me with the list of drives to choose to install (i am aware that the prompt should happen during the MSDOS mode installation procedure)

i also tried installing it from MSDOS.
i ran i386/winnt.exe, which is the core setup file.
it asked me where the installation source files were located (which is normal).
after that, it should have asked which drive i wanted to install windows to, but never did... it just started copying the system files into the C drive without my goahead.

my hard drive is partitioned (c,d,e,f,g).

Are "D", "E", "F" or "G" Primary partitions or extended/logical? Operating systems can only load to a "Primary" partition. You can have up to four primary partitions and as many logical partitions as you want.

It has been a while, but I think the partition choosing is done in the GUI phase. It copies files to the c drive for the install then when entering the GUI it should prompt for you to pick the partition to do the actual install on.

4 x Primary (only), or 1, 2, or 3 x Primary + 1 x Extended is OK with NT family OS's.

oic... how efficient eh

i've installed win98 (deciding to wait for the second releases of 2k and xp) and am sticking with the single OS.

but out of curiosity - i did let the initial file copy finish, and it restarted my computer. that's when it hung on "verifying dmi pool data." the setup never got to finish.
so i formatted the hard drive and installed windows 98 once again. why did i get the dmi pool hang on the win2k setup but not win98's?
