I've recently purchased a new computer with NO OS installed. I put in the W2K cd (burned version) and the blue screen popped up. It partioned the hard drive and after that it started to copy files onto the hard drive. An error occured around 7% of the way and i just skipped the file. Now it won't boot. It just leads me to a screen where it says
Press any key to boot from CD....
Is there a way where i can start over or fix this problem? I tried various boot disks and stuff and no luck. :(

hi,
did you try with the good old dos/fdisk utility? simply partion your hdd with dos 6.2 or similar, run format, copy the i386 directory of the win2k cd to that partition and run 'winnt' (i386-directory). that should work.
cheers,
ray

Hiya Johnson.
Sounds like you have a bad copy of the installation CD (home-burnt?) and ought to try and get another. As a rule whenever windows stops you and says "can't find xxx file: shall i cancel, skip, or wait for you to find the file?" *never* choose "skip" unless you know exactly what file it is and know for a fact that you don't need/want it - which is rarely the case even for folks who work with windows (too many files).

Short of getting another cd you can also
(a) try another cd drive (if you have one)
(b) try to copy the entire cd to harddrive and install from there as suggested by Ray (you do not need fdisk (or similar partioning tool if you already have more than one volume (partition) to work with).
(c) try to re-install same as first time and - if it hiccups again - write down the missing file(s) and research what they do & if you can easily get just those files from another source (internet download).

It is not uncommon that home-burnt CDs are not as easily read by all drives all the time: it could even be that if you tried again your CD reader would successfully decipher the data off the disk and install fine - but likely not. Best is to borrow the original from whomever provided the copy and/or have them burn you another. If that's awkward, for whatever reason, then you'll have to fuss.

Copying CD to disk (b) and then performing a file-compare between hdd <-> CD files would be what a techy-type would do if they couldn't get their hands on a better CD, but if you are unfamiliar with the world of partitions then it's probably more involved than you want to attempt.

G'luck! jap

Johnson-

It also says im missing a boot record?!?!?

First, get a legal copy of the OS. Then, boot to the CD and install the OS, formatting the machine.

Whilst echoing Jennifer's comments re' getting a legal copy... there is a possibilty that even with one you will still have the problem of file copying etc., and the resultant situation.

That problem can frequently be due to RAM issues - but not always...

W2K is picky about RAM quality/specs.

Perhaps try fresh RAM; beg/borrow etc... as fresh 128Meg stick (the ideal min for W2K is 128Meg.). If you have 2 x 128 Stcks at present, try each alone in turn. See if that allows you to succeed. But again get a legal copy of W2K too...?

Also be sure that the system is OK for W2K; you have all required drivers etc. - before starting out...; perhaps run the W2K readiness check util? And again - get a legal copy of W2K too...
