I can't boot into Windows 98 anymore. The reason is that Windows 98 had a really bad crash and it won't start anymore. The only way is to re-install or re-format the Windows 98 partition. However, since Windows 98 does replace the master boot record, I'm just wondering is there anyway I can make a copy of the Windows 2000 Boot Record and Replace it after I re-install Windows 98 so that I may be able to dual boot again.

Warning this process is for administrators and therefore can mess the system up if not done correctly.
OK what you need to do is create an emergency repair disk, this is done by running ntbackup.exe, tools menu, create emergency repair disk.
This will rebuild the boot record later, but to use it you will need the setup process, so once Win98 is reinstalled boot off your W2k cd/setup disks and once the setup has started it will detect the old version of W2k and ask if you want to repair it, say yes, it will then ask for the emergency repair disk, select rebuild boot sector and all SHOULD be well.
As I said earlier this is risky, but its the only way to rebuild it once Win98 has been installed so what have you got to lose.

I have the same problem with the Win2K/Win98 dual boot. But I can't boot from the Win2K CD anymore. The first time I did it, everything worked great, but when I ran Win98, it crashed and wont reinstall anymore. And now I get a STOP error then booting from the Win2K CD. I get errors with re-installing Win98. Formatting and repartitioning the hard drive doesn't help, I've disabled the UDMA settings in CMOS, so it's not the UDMA/66 issue. While installing Win98, I get a General Protection Fault with MSGSRV32.DLL in module USER.exe or a Fatal Exception or GPF with SUWIN.DLL also. WMEXE.DLL was another problem file, which I deleted (it was a bad WinModem driver). Still get errors. Completely messed up. Much good RAM, good motherboard.
I'm perplexed. Any suggestions?
Yes? Quit computers? Great idea! I'm fed up with this!!

For Adminstator out there, there is a ware call
Go Back. This will save you time if your system
went bad. Every time you boot-up Go back will tak
e a image of your drive and save it. If anything
happen you just......go back...to the previous ...

I have had many such problems with dual-boot (mostly with LINUX and w2k) and anymore the first thing I will do is to boot with a windows 98 boot disk and run fdisk /mbr from a DOS prompt. This restores the MBR and has not failed me once. BACK UP YOUR DATA ON DUAL BOOT SYSTEMS OR PAY THE PRICE! Mark
