I'm using win 2000 pro, and I cannot use
ping or ipconfig commands. When I do I receive message "it is not recognized as an internal or external command or operable program or batch file. How can I fix this. Please Help!!!

ping is actually ping.exe, located in C:\Winnt\system32
It might be that your PATH isn't correct.
Try opening a command prompt, and go to the folder C:\Winnt\system32 and execute it from there.

To use the ipconfig command I know you have to open a dos windows and do it from there. ipconfig/all will show you all of the info you need.

First of all you want to check your TCP/IP settings, make sure that your DHCP is activated or that you have a static IP. On your advanced TCP/IP settings if you are configured with DHCP then on the DNS tab normally your first windows field which is called "DNS sever addresses, in order of use:" should be blank, but the "append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" button should be clicked also check the box below that. and the very bottom one on the same DNS tab to register your connection with DNS. ALso do check in the WINNT\System32 that you have the executables for both ping and ipconfig if they're missing you may have to replace them from your W2K Cd.
Good luckCharlie

If you can't ping.....reinstall networking.....it's as simple as that....and also make sure you have the right nic driver.

I'm having the same problems here too.
Hello everyone, This is my first post
I keep getting this error message when I try to use IPCONFIG and PING from the CMD Dos Prompt.
'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Now I checked my C:\Winnt\system32, and both the IPCONFIG.exe and PING.exe files are there but they just come up for like a second and just suddenly disappear. So I guess it's not working when I try to execute it from the C:\Winnt\system32 directory.
Now, not having that much experience with Win 2000 Professional, what should I do?

Usually the path variable is defaulted to c:\winnt\system32, so when you go to a command prompt you can automatically use those command. You probably changed your path variable. This can be found by right-clicking My Computer, going to Properties and clicking on the Advanced tab. Click on the Environmenal Variables, hightlight PATH in the BOTTOM part of the box that pops up. It should say c:\winnt\system32
