I have a Compaq 500 Mhz machine. I am having problem installing windows 2000 pro on it. THe bios will only allow you to boot from floppy or hard drive nothing else. If i boot off a windows 2000 pro boot disk it gives me disk I/O error with first disk, i then tried booting off a windows 98 disk and it worked so i formated the drive. Now i need to install the OS but nothing is working because i cant book into windows 2000 off the cd and the boot disk does not help. Can someone please help.

Are you certain that the CD drive is working? Is it listed in the CMOS setup? If it's not, that might be why the BIOS won't let it be set as a boot device - and you're going to need it at some point
The disk I/O error from the floppy likely means a bad diskette (since the Win98 one worked)

You need to download the 4 floppies for 2000. Then you can install from the CD

Nice try, but he's been there & done that, according to the info posted:
"If i boot off a windows 2000 pro boot disk it gives me disk I/O error with first disk"
Regardless, that machine should support CD booting - the diskettes are mainly a workaround for legacy machines

Is the CDROM showing in the bios settings?
Can you see/access the CDROM (and thus the W2K CD) via a '98 bootdisk?
If so then there might be a couple of options to consider...

Boot off the 98 floppy as you have done, load Smartdrv.exe and then run WINNT.exe from X:\I386 - where X is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.

post-5 is one the options alluded to in post-4 - providing the cdrom is detected etc. in/by the bios.
