Hi all:

I have a windows 2000 server installation. There is a file on the computer that I am unable to delete using the "RM" command from the resource kit. It is a POSIX utility. I tried the "del" command but it says that the file is being used and it cannot delete it. I downloaded "process explorer" from SysInternals and the file is not being used or locked by any process. So I tried using the RM command as follows:

posix /c rm D:\xxx\xx\xx\xx\xx.xxx

I get the following error:

posix: cannot start process.

This is driving me nuts. I need to be able to get rid of the file and I cannot think of any other way to do it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried to boot in safe mode (pressing F8 at boot) and then use Del from the system console?

Lemme guess.

It's NTFS

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Rammmi.

This will definitely work because it takes you completely outside W2K. Go to http://www.ubcd4win.com/ and download the instructions for creating this terrific bootable maintenance CD. You may be able to find an actual downloadable .ico file on another boot CD site, to burn for a quick fix, but you definitely want to make ubcd4win. These boot CDs are copycats (but without copyright problems) of the Windows PE boot CD. When running from the booted CD all the maintenance software is on the CD and runs in a RAMdisk set up in your servers RAM. This way you can operate on the W2K files without ever waking up W2K unwanted protects and locks. Experience marvelleous maintenance power ;)
