I have a weird problem. I cannot change my monitor type. It is set as "Default Monitor" and there is no way to change it. The monitor options doesn't appear in Device Manager, and the Properties Option in the Advanced tab it greyed out. Is there a fix for this? I noticed several other people had this problem on the forum, but there was no responses on how to fix it.
Thanks for the help

Try right clicking on the desktop, then properties, select the settings tab, click the advanced button, select monitor, from the list select the monitor you want to update/replace, click on properties, go to driver's tab, click on UPDATE DRIVER, follow the instructions.
Same procedure is possible from the Device Manager, find Monitor, doble click the monitor you want to replace, select driver's tab, update driver, etc.

If I could "click" the properties button I could choose the monitor that's the whole problem. The Properties button is greyed out and there is no monitors option in my Device Manager...

I have the exact same problem, and it really sucks! I've tried installing and re-installing W2K's default video adapter, not to mention trying everything else under the sun. I don't have any idea how to fix it. Maybe mucking about in the registry is the answer. I'll let you know if I have any luck...

Oh, yeah, I'm logged in as "administrator", not a user with administrator rights. It just doesn't matter. The Property command button under Monitor Type remains grayed out.
I played around in the registry. From what I could tell, the registry knows that my monitor is a Hitachi CM-753 monitor, but my display settings show "Default Monitor" and the refresh seems off-base.
Any other ideas?

Yes I'm logged in as administrator.. that had no affect.. I've been through the registry alot and havent been able to find anything to help....With "Default Monitor" it likes to switch my refresh rates back to 60 hz all the time instead of 85 where I usually run it...

I found the monitor settings in the registry under My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class. I had to dig through the hardware keys to find the one for my monitor. Under that was the key "0000", and under that was the key "MODES", and under that was the key "1600,1280", the maximum capability of my monitor. The only place I could find the 85Hz refresh for my monitor was under the "Display Properties" window. I know this doesn't really help, but it's all I could find.

Try removing the "Default Monitor" in Device Manager and then click on the "Refresh" button. The system will re-detect your monitor's type. It should be "Plug and Play monitor" or displayed as your monitor model name.
This problem is mostly concerned about the display driver or BIOS problem.
Try to update the display driver first. If this still doesn't work, ask your system's vender about new BIOS update.

Hello,
I'll look at that registry area and see if there's anything there. As for removing it from device manager... if it was there it would make it so much easier... to bad there is no monitors section in my device manager.. :(

Yeah, you can't remove "Default Monitor" from Device Manager if you can't see it. Somebody must know how to fix this...

Thanks to another users info I have found out that the monitor disappearing problems was due to the fact of the drivers used for the Creative Labs DXr3 DVD Decoder card. Once the drivers were manually removed I rebooted and the plug-n-pray found a monitor and I choose my monitor from the list. All seems fine now. I'm going to manually add each file back to my winnt/system dir to find out which file is causing the monitor to disappear.

Unbelievable...I too have the Creative Labs Encore 8X DVD with the DXR3 DVD Decoder. I installed the W2K beta drivers only to have them consistently crash my system. How do you manually remove the drivers?

This same issue has now appearred on Win XP. Come on Microsoft and Creative, learn from mistakes, dont repeat them plz.
