I had a surfboard 4100 cable modem installed on a seperate direct cable and I have it installed on my USB port. When on line it disconnects every 10 minutes or so. Most times I can get it back by opening a bunch of programs (Outlook Express, Outlook, Word & another browser window). Other times I to reboot. It acts like it goes to sleep after awhile and after opening a bunch of programs it "wakes up". This has been going on since I hooked it up but has gotten much worse in the last month. I installed a network card and hooked it up that way but it seems worse that way. HELP very frustrated - called Optimum Online Support and they did some tests and said everything is fine and suggested I contacted Motorola. I went to their site & downloaded the latest drivers but that did not help.

Don't know if this helps or not, but I had the same issue with DSL. Turns out my provider would "drop" my connection after about fifteen minutes. Apparently if they polled my pc at a particular moment and I was pass traffic through the router I would lose the connection and have to either reboot or open multiple programs. What I did to get around it is simply open a DOS box and start a ping like this:
ping www.knac.com -t If you put the -t switch on there it will constantly ping that address thus creating constant traffic on the line whether you are home or not. Just make sure not to close the DOS box. This helped me, but I don't know it helps you.

Thanks...I've been keeping a keno game open in the background that plays constantly which seems to help. It only disconnects every 30-45 minutes now instead of every 10 minutes. But still interested in permanent fix if anyone has one!!

Do you have to use a connection manager to connnect to the internet...If so, maybe you could try a different one...I use "Invasion" It worked ten times better than the one my service provider gave me...Before I got that one, it would dump me off around twelve at night til I started doing all my downloads around that time...

lots of time when the cable modem disconnects you should go in and release and renew your ip address you can do this in the command prompt by ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew
