boot.ini missing

Comment:
I have a system running a dual boot of win98Se and win 2000 pro. I went to find the boot.ini file to edit it (to remove win 98) and the system cannot find it. I know its a hidden file -- i have my system properties (win 2000) to show all files. This machine has been hanging when attempting to shutdown or restart, but (this is the weird thing) it boots just fine.

Although Boot.ini is a hidden file, if you look a little further down the list of options, where you select to show all hidden files there is an additional option that says "hide all known file extensions", or words to that effect. Turn this option off and hey presto, Boot.ini will appear.

Go to Command Prompt (Win2k) or DOS Prompt (Win9x)
type in root directory:
attrib boot.ini -r -h -s
now you can edit the file
BUT, if you're unsure, try not to play with these settings, you're better off using the properties sheet from "My Computer". If you make a mistake in boot.ini file, you can actually stop your computer from booting, both to Win9x and Win2k

To be more correct, there's an option in win2k to unhide protected operating system files. boot.ini is one of these files. Uncheck that option and it will appear.
Using attrib in dos is an equally good method. Rest assured, if you can boot, you definitely have a boot.ini.
