boot problems but fdisk unavailable

Comment:
I want to fdisk /mbr in the win2000 repair console, but fdisk is not available to run. how do I reformat my mbr to allow a reinstallation of win2000?
Download a WIN98SE boot disk from www.bootdisk.com, that is if you are using FAT partitions, W9x can not see and recognise NTFS

You don't need to Fdisk /mbr prior to re-installing W2K; just run W2K set-up as per norm (CD boot or the 4 floppies).
Whether you choose to delete all partitions and then reconfigure etc., or just a plain reformat the current partition (targeted for W2K system files) up to you.
It will all happen regardless - i.e. mbr will be rewritten to W2K version during set-up.
Why the need to re-install?

the problem: win2k is on the first partition, linux on another one. grub was on the mbr, but couldn't load win2k so I tried to fix the mbr using fixboot and fixmbr. this messed up the mbr so when I try to boot windows it just says "disk error press any key to restart".
the solution: I think I need to fdisk /mbr, format my system partition (C:), then reinstall win2k.
if this doesn't restore the mbr to the original state then I am really lost.

try tomsrtbt, I believe you can restore the disk with his fdisk utility. It's helped me with screwed up disks in the past.
Boot up to the command prompt and type fidisk use fidisk to partition your W2K drive and exit. Now boot with W2K and setup the OS in the unpartitioned space for W2K
