Comment:

I recently deleted several viruses. Now when I boot the PC, this is the error I see on a black screen:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected device.

If I press ctrl-alt-del, then the PC will boot into windows. If the PC has been running and I select restart PC, then the PC start up fine. When the PC has been off it doesn't boot into windows without me haveing to press ctrl-alt-del.

I have reset the bios completely. I have gone into the bios and selected system defaults.

I have checked in the bios and it sees the HD as the Master boot drive. I have no slave drive.

This didn't help me

I believe that the following might be my only remaining options.

I could repair windows, but that will make me reinstall all service packs and windows updates.

I also thought that maybe it was the MBR.

How can I repair the Master Boot Record? Will I lose any data or programs?

What would you experts suggest I do?

Because it starts up right when it's warm but not when it's cold(been off for a while), I would think it's a hardware issue. You say when you select restart after it's been on for a while it works correctly. Does it work correctly when it's been on for a while then you shut it down all the way, then start it up immediately?

Hi mvoltage,

I agree with domass that this sounds like HW.

I recommend you reseat everything [with power UNPLUGGED].

If no change, unplug CD. It sounds like the HD is taking just a little too long to initialize.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

I will reseat everything.

This is some new info>

In Bios setup utility under view event log it indicates I have a problem.

Pre-Boot Error: CMOS Checksum Error.

I have reset the bios already.

Any other ideas?

It could mean your bios may be corrupted, can you flash the bios with the latest update? It might also mean some of the hardware isn't working properly to let the bios firmware do it's job.
