I recently deleted several viruses. Now when I boot the PC, this is the error I see on a black screen:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected device.

If I press ctrl-alt-del, then the PC will boot into windows. If the PC has been running and I select restart PC, then the PC start up fine. When the PC has been off it doesn't boot into windows without me haveing to press ctrl-alt-del.

I have reset the bios completely. I have gone into the bios and selected system defaults.

I have checked in the bios and it sees the HD as the Master boot drive. I have no slave drive.

In Bios setup utility under view event log it indicates I have a problem.

Pre-Boot Error: CMOS Checksum Error.

I have reset the bios already. The clock and date are always correct. So I don't think it is a battery issue.

I ran recovery console in Win2K and I did a fixmbr. This didn't solve the issue so I then did a fixboot. Now when I boot, I get a message press ctrl-alt-B to configure. If I do that it takes me into a bios like screen, but I'm not sure what to do. If I don't press ctrl-alt-B, then it moves to another screen where in the upper left there is a blinking underscore like so:" _ "
If instead of pressing ctrl-alt-B, I press ctrl-alt-del, it will boot into windows. I really would like my PC to boot up with out all this extra hoopla.

Why does it say ctrl-alt-B to configure on boot up?

What would you experts suggest I do?

cleaning the virus's most likely removed the master boot record which is why you get the flashing cursor.

The bios event sounds old and not new so I would ignore it.

I would suspect your setting the bios to "default" enabled a onboard device requiring the "control alt b". You will have to find that device in the bios and disable it [look that nic configuration]

To repair your 2000 installation start the W2K cd via the bios. This will start install. When you get to the screen choice of new install or repair install choose repair. This will refresh your W2K install but leave your apps/data intact.

Once complete you should be able to boot normally. You will need to redo all of your updates since you are back at factory install.
