blue stop screen when booting with new H

I have had this problem a couple times when installing new hardware. My current issue is with my new Maxtor HD. I put the new HD in as my new drive 1 and booted...only after i get the loading windows screen it cuts out to the blue stop screen saying to check any new hardware. With my plexwriter 8x4x32 i used to get that error when i installed adaptec easy cd-creator after norton antivirus or if i tried to upgrade the cd-rw firmware but could bypass it by starting in the last known good configuration. I'd rather not have to continually do that here...any help?
